When Can My Baby Eat Solids?

July 18, 2018

Are you introducing solids to your baby too early?  There was a News item on the ABC about research showing that babies taking food at 6 months are more settled.  I couldn't find this one in the feed but it concerns me that people may be introducing solids too quickly.

Over the last 5 years, there have been various changes to the recommended timing of introduction of solids.  This was due to research on allergies.  Five months seems to be the reasonable approximate time for slowly starting to introduce solids.  Without knowing what the parameters are for the study, it is difficult to judge the merit of the research.

Babies are all individuals and if gaining weight satisfactorily, can be unsettled for lots of different reasons. Mothers should be guided on this by the advice of their Early Childhood nurse to exclude the many and varied reasons for unsettled behaviour.
